Limited Movement Reported at Rafah Border Crossing

(MENAFN) The Gaza media office announced Monday that adherence to the reopening of the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza Strip reached just 29%, citing stringent Israeli limitations.

In its declaration, the office explained that from Feb. 2 to Feb. 15, merely 811 passengers managed to transit through the crossing in both directions, out of 2,800 individuals who had been scheduled to travel.

The statement detailed that 455 individuals were permitted to leave Gaza, 356 entered the territory, while 26 others were denied passage during that timeframe.

It further clarified that Israel resumed operations on the Palestinian side of the crossing on Feb. 2 in a highly restricted capacity, after maintaining control over it since May 2024.

The media office added that it had not been briefed on the standards or mechanisms used to set the total number of travelers authorized to pass.

Earlier coverage by Egyptian and Israeli outlets indicated that roughly 50 Palestinians were anticipated to cross into Gaza each day, with a comparable figure expected to enter Egypt, including patients and those accompanying them. However, the office noted that these projections were not entirely carried out.

Estimates from Palestinian sources in Gaza suggest that approximately 22,000 injured and ill individuals need to leave the enclave to receive medical care abroad, particularly as the healthcare system has deteriorated.

Semi-official data also reveal that nearly 80,000 Palestinians have enrolled to return to Gaza, underscoring an ongoing refusal to accept displacement despite extensive devastation.
